Written music notation acts as the ultimate tablature system, applicable to any instrument, including the voice. This ingenious system originated in the Middle Ages and quickly gained popularity. In fact, some even credit the invention of music notation for the development of algebra.
Learning to read music brings a multitude of practical benefits. By mastering musical notation, you gain the ability to learn tunes from online resources and books. You can also create your own collection of written tunes, ensuring you never forget a piece. Imagine being able to jot down the first few bars of every tune you know, preventing the frustration of forgetting how a piece begins.
The Basics of Reading Music
Reading written music is simpler than you might think. Just like the alphabet song we learned as children, you only need to remember the first seven letters of the alphabet.
A musical staff consists of five parallel horizontal lines, resembling graph paper. The lines and spaces on this staff represent pitches and rhythms. Multiple staves can fit on a page, read from the top left. Connected staves are to be read together, not sequentially.
Each staff is marked with a "clef" sign, with most Celtic, folk, fakebook, and WWW lead line music written in treble clef. Treble clef lines, from low to high, can be remembered using mnemonics such as "Every Good Boy Does Fine", "Every Girl Beats Ducks Flat", or "Fifty Dollars Buys Good Eats". Similarly, spaces between the lines in treble clef can be remembered as "face".
Understanding the basics of musical notation, including middle C and octave concepts, is crucial. Additionally, exploring sharps and flats will introduce you to the full range of 12 tones within an octave.
